Newport Cycling Club’s Ben Goddard has made a solid start to the racing season.
Two weeks ago after his Majorca training camp he narrowly missed out on a top placing at the Severn bridge 3/4 RR. After coming over the top of the final climb to the fore, he unfortunately got swamped as the pace dropped before the flat finish.
Last week Ben raced in the Sundorne 2nd/3rd Category criterium and finished in the top 20 in a fast race. Yesterday in the Frank Morgan RR in Liverpool a, prestigious race in that part of the world, Ben got in two separate moves.
However, with a field of 80 riders the pace remained high and both moves were closed down. Towards the end two riders finally slipped away and Ben finished mid-bunch in the 60 man gallop for 3rd.
After this fast racing with the 2nd Category riders, Ben is hoping that when he tackles the 3rd cat races he has scheduled for May/June, the extra speed will show.
