Olympic Gold Medallist Joanna Rowsell showed her class at the Newport (Shropshire) Cycling Club 10 mile Time Trial last Saturday. The British Champion was racing at the Shrewsbury Grand Prix the following day so had decided to compete in the event at Wollerton.
She wasn’t alone as over 50 riders from all over the county came to compete. Despite the wet conditions every rider got round with no issues. Ms Rowsell finished 4th overall but claimed top spot in the Women’s catergory with a time of 22:34.
The fastest Newport CC rider was Tim Nelson with a time of 24:57 with Rob Cannell coming home in 25:31. Mark Stock rode a time of 26:36 however he was penalised 14 minutes for a late start due to him forgetting his shoes. However he put all this behind him and still returned a decent time.
Nova Raiders Ed Middleton was narrowly beaten by Newport based Richard Nickless of Revolutions Racing with times of 23:15 and 22:50 respectively.
As is traditional in these events the riders went back to Wollerton Social Club for much needed refreshments. Ms Rowsell showed that she is a true champion on an off the bike as she happily posed with riders and spectators for numerous photos.
Newport TT Secretary was amazed when he realised the event would involve the current World Individual Pursuit Champion. He added “It’s great to have an athlete of her standing riding an event like ours.”
Miss Rowsell later tweeted “I was very pleased with today, apart from the rain the conditions weren’t too bad, a light head wind out and bit of a tail wind on the return. For Shropshire it’s a lovely smooth course, just a bit drier would be nice.”
A big thank you to Sean Lacey for organising it and to all the volunteers who Marshalled the event.
