About Newport Shropshire Cycling Club

Newport Shropshire Cycling Club is one of the premier cycling clubs in Shropshire. Throughout the year we promote a series of Club Events and Open Races and also have our own healthy racing section in the club taking part in all disciplines (Road Racing, Track, Cyclo-Cross). We welcome any new members, of any age, who wish to ride socially, race or take part in the sport in any way.

History of the Club

In 1976 the late Robert Prentice (History teacher) formed the Burton Borough Cycling Club and started out with its young members competing in circuit races, time trials, grass track and hard track racing throughout the Midlands. In 1977 the club had its 1st area schools champion with Richard Goddard (2nd from left) winning the under 13's race at Birmingham. With increasing interest from parents and friends it was decided to open up the club to more like minded people who enjoyed cycling and so in 1977 the Newport (Salop) Cycling Club was formed. In 2007 it was decided that the name of the club needed to be brought up to date and was renamed as Newport Shropshire Cycling Club. Over the years the Club has grown into a strong traditional club that supports cycle touring as well as racing whether it be Road, Time Trialling, Mountain Biking, Down Hill or Track.
